‘Does a gospel artiste twerk online? Is your husband happy with you? – Serwaa Amihere asks Empress Gifty

Renowned broadcaster Serwaa Amihere recently sat down with gospel singer Empress Gifty, raising pointed questions about her bold and unconventional presence on social media.

During the candid conversation, Serwaa pressed Empress Gifty about her fashion choices, noting that many gospel musicians opt for modest, traditional styles, whereas Empress Gifty often prefers tight-fitting outfits and a more vibrant look. She asked why Empress Gifty doesn’t adhere to more reserved dress codes commonly associated with gospel artistes.

Empress Gifty replied, “Are gospel musicians supposed to dress a certain way? That’s their choice. I don’t buy the clothes, shoes, or bags I wear myself—brands ensure I look good.”

The discussion turned to Empress Gifty’s marriage, with Serwaa asking whether her husband approves of her social media image and fashion sense. Empress Gifty challenged the assumption, saying, “You keep saying ‘carry.’ What do you mean by that? We have different ministries and functions. If I’m not a prophet, why should I behave like one?”

Serwaa also referenced videos of Empress Gifty dancing online, sometimes appearing to twerk, and questioned whether such behaviour was appropriate for a gospel musician. Empress Gifty dismissed the criticism, responding, “What is twerking? I don’t recall doing that on social media. If you see only my backside when I’m walking, then that’s your problem—you’ve sinned. Even when I dance, what song am I dancing to? If it’s gospel music, what’s the issue?”

Empress Gifty concluded, “I don’t want anyone to put me in a box. I am Empress Gifty.”
